Income Inequality and Corporate Accountability

Responsible business owners understand and accept that they have an obligation to engage in business practices that support the health and welfare of the local community and environment. It is unacceptable that Washington and the 11th District are home to some of the wealthiest businesses and individuals in the US, yet we still suffer from vast amounts of income inequality.

We must hold corporations accountable to ensure forward progress for our state and all its residents. Corporations demand infrastructure including the best educated workforce, yet continue to ask for tax breaks. Yes, we do need to provide the top notch infrastructure and business ecosystem, but it can’t all fall on the backs of hard working families and the poor who are already stretched to the max.

While we’re making progress at reversing the 90’s-ish trend of scapegoating the most vulnerable and improving access to the social safety net, we exacerbate the problem by making them and middle-class families pay for that social safety net. Wealthy corporations and individuals get off relatively free because they only pay a pittance of their income in taxes.

  • One of my foundational changes for our state is to establish a “People’s Bank” of Washington — A bank, owned by the State of Washington and other municipalities that want to join us, which invests in our people and our communities.
    • Build beautiful communities by building significant amounts of mixed income multigenerational public housing to eliminate the upward pressure on housing costs created by the huge disparity between supply and demand for housing
    • Build sidewalks and walkable communities
    • Build community gathering places for socializing and small and micro-business commerce
    • Support capital investments in transit
    • Advance the timeline for completion of Sound Transit light rail
    • Build schools
    • Leverage our tax revenues to significantly increase our financing capacity for needed public infrastructure
    • Will make a profit and raise new revenue for the people of Washington and the 11th, without raising taxes
    • Recaptures control of our tax dollars to reinvest in Washington, not export it as profits for Wall Street
  • Support of Public broadband as both an economic development strategy and a small “d” democratic infrastructure
  • No more regressive taxes, we need to begin conversations about comprehensive progressive tax reform
  • Corporate compliance with international standards on:
    • Worker safety
    • Anti-human trafficking laws
    • Clean supply chains
    • Environmental and Climate Change
    • U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Affordable Housing

We all know Washington state and the 11th face a homelessness and housing crisis. These issues are inextricably connected, and both are born from and exacerbated by income inequality. There is no silver bullet when it comes to solving the most pressing issue our district faces, therefore, we must address the many sides of the issue simultaneously if we expect to improve outcomes for all our families.

Over the decades, private developers have successfully changed our housing narrative from “public housing” to “affordable housing.” Besides the obvious problem of defining what’s “affordable,” the shift in narrative has led us to now rely on private developers as the solution rather than public housing. Private developers will never build enough housing to keep costs down because it’s not in their best interest to do so. Despite that, the state and local governments keep pouring more and more tax dollars as subsidies to “entice” more private development, often even raising more regressive taxes to pay for them.

Small Business Development

Small businesses are the backbone of Washington’s economy. From restaurants and cafes to barber shops and grocery stores to light manufacturing and construction, it should be easier to do business with our neighbors, and bid on public contracts. As your State Senator I will continue to focus on ensuring the success of the small businesses that call Washington and the 11th home.

  • Technical trainings and assistance that prepare small business owners for doing business in the 21st-century
  • Tax relief for small business owners to help attain sustainability
  • Commercial rent stabilization in mixed use facilities
  • Displacement protection during construction work
  • Supports for Success and equity of access for our minority and women-owned businesses and other MWBE’s/DBE’s (Disadvantaged Business Enterprises)
  • Bid preferences for local hires on public contracts
  • Supports to develop international trade capacity

Equity

While the federal level threatens to undermine the progress Washington has made in the last century, we will continue to be a beacon of hope. Together, we will fight to ensure the state leads the nation by example through inclusive policy that protects the most vulnerable among us and preserves the opportunity of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness for everyone.

  • Supporting public education as the backbone of a civilized society and the paramount duty of our state. This includes dealing with all the wrap-around issues students need in order to learn
  • Supporting families and children from birth to school so every child has the opportunity to be the best they can. Lifelong learning isn’t just for us OG’s, it also means at the earliest stages of life and learning.
  • Reforming our criminal justice system with more strategies to create productive citizens: diversion strategies, workforce and skills training, therapeutic courts
  • Lower-priced or free community centers in neighborhoods where cost is a barrier, with nurturing programming
  • Increased budget resources for outreach and community organizing
  • Youth Works public employment programs
  • Immigration and refugee protections and supports
  • Anti-hate crime laws
  • Gender pay equity
  • Paid family leave
  • Robust race and social justice analysis built into ever policy the state considers
